Singel 39 plot
Mo – short for Monique – has only one focus in her life: her medical career. Everything else is secondary. Where would she find the time alone to date, for example? But when the extroverted Max moves in next door, a special friendship develops that makes Mo see that there is more to life than just her career. That you should live life instead of planning.

'Singel 39' (2019) is set in a yuppie universe where people's lives have the glow of an advertising video and no signs appear on the screen when the viewer has to laugh or cry. We won't call it a romantic comedy, because the complications of Mo (Lies Visschedijk) and Max (Waldemar Torenstra) revolve around their platonic relationship and mutual desire to have children. Mo is written as the archetypal scatterbrain in love; Max as the easy-going construct of a gay man where deviating from stereotypes is more important than his personality. Chewing unrecognizably with an attempt at a vulgar accent and the workshop he runs for the probation service. Hè is self-evidently an Adau-suppogtâh! And yet the premise does not rise above the level of a doctor's story, with a highly educated career woman who still needs the seed of a man to find completeness. Not everything is love, but this microwave version of progressive values still has the air of interchangeable films with 'love' in the title.

Wonderfully uncomplicated film, we certainly enjoyed it. And that in quarantine.
Too many Dutch dredging films have been made, this is certainly not one.
