Joker is the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, with box office receipts totalling $1,074,251,311.
According to the United States Motion Picture Association film rating system, an R-rated movie is one in which "Under 17s require an accompanying parent or adult guardian. Contains some adult material. Parents are urged to learn more about the film before taking their young children with them."
Joker, released in 2019, proved to be a critical and commercial success as fans flocked to see a fresh incarnation of the most famous villain in comic book history.
Directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix, the latter won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Arthur Fleck, whose fight against poverty and the elite of Gotham City saw him develop into the Joker.

On a budget of $70 million, it earned over a billion dollars at the box office.
There is a 2023 movie in second, as Oppenheimer has earned $960,238,660. Christopher Nolan's epic stars Cillian Murphy in the title role and tells the story of the birth of the atomic bomb via the Manhattan Project.
Currently, the two movies that take up third and fourth in the top 10 are Deadpool 2 and Deadpool.
Deadpool 2 led the rankings before the release of Joker, as it earned $786,470,484 in ticket sales.
Since the introduction of the R-rating, seven movies have held the title as the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever: Joker, Deadpool 2, Deadpool, The Matrix: Reloaded, Terminator 2, Pretty Woman and The Exorcist.
There is just one comedy and one horror film to make the top 10, The Hangover Part II and IT respectively.
There is just one movie in the top 10 that was not an American release and that is 2021's Chinese action comedy, Detective Chinatown 3.
