Ally McBeal plot
Ally McBeal is a young lawyer. She works for the fictional Boston law firm of Cage & Fish, which consists of some very eccentric lawyers. She regularly visits a bar with her colleagues. A special aspect of the office are the so-called unisex toilets. The men's and women's toilets are not separated from each other, and usually important outpourings and developments take place here. Lawsuits are used to philosophize about love, sex and romance and the relationships between men and women, and to direct the life of mainly Ally.

This series about a law firm in Boston combines legal disputes with a dose of romance, humor and music. Each episode starts with a funny teaser. The zapping '90s audience had to watch the preceding commercial, because anyone who tuned in too late would have missed the opening.
Topics such as discrimination, censorship, political correctness, transsexuality, artificial insemination, sexism and transgressive behavior are discussed in a humorous way. The defenders use surprising arguments, rhetorical techniques and delaying maneuvers. Sensitive discussions take place in the unisex toilets. Banal disputes give the impression that Americans are taking each other to court over the slightest misstep. “We're in the business of getting even.”
Ally McBeal (Calista Flockhart) comes across as playful and girlish. Her vivid imagination expresses itself in fantasy images that symbolically express how she feels, but also inspires her to approach a legal case from an original angle. She makes Freudian slips. Sometimes her body language says the opposite of her words.
Music plays a central role. For lawyers, they have an above-average singing talent. John Cage, namesake of the equally eccentric composer, believes that an internal anthem can have a music therapeutic use. For Ally it will be Tell Him by The Exciters. Vonda Shepard introduces the tune Searchin' My Soul, and sings piano versions of appropriate oldies.
