The Fortnite Outlaw Keycard is one of the most powerful items you can possess, as it allows you to enter certain restricted areas so you can access better weapons, with more benefits becoming available as you upgrade it further. You'll begin with the basic Common Outlaw Keycard that opens up the backrooms at the Fortnite Black Markets, where you'll find several helpful NPCs as well as exotic weapons to purchase, but as you complete challenges to improve your standing with the Outlaws that keycard becomes considerably more useful – dropping free Bars to collect on every Black Market visit and even spawning a guaranteed Legendary item plus Dill Bit when you max out your level.

This process can be a little confusing, and some players have had issues progressing their upgrades past the initial stage, which isn't very helpful. With that in minde, here's everything you need to know about unlocking the Outlaw Keycard in Fortnite and what you can do to upgrade it afterwards.

The Common Fortnite Outlaw Keycard should now be unlocked for all players as the Community quest has reached 100% completion, however progress for some has got stuck and not unlocked the next Fortnite quests to upgrade the keycard. If this happens to you then you'll need to crack another vault in standard Battle Royale mode to trigger your quests to move on, and robbing vaults, the armored train, or the armored truck should all count toward this.

Once you've unlocked the Common Outlaw Keycard, you'll then need to complete further Outlaw Keycard quests to earn upgrades for it. The quests available are as follows:

  • Rob Vaults (3)
  • Eliminate bosses or guards (25)
  • Spend Bars (1,500)
  • Collect Boons or Medallions (2)

Each of the above Fortnite Outlaw Keycard Quests can be repeated over a total of five stages, helping you progress towards earning the better rarity Outlaw Keycards outlined below:

  • 1 Quest - Common Outlaw Keycard
Grants access to Black Market backrooms where Exotic items are available to purchase, and two of them also contain Fortnite characters.
  • 5 Quests - Uncommon Outlaw Keycard
You can purchase items from Outlaw Vending Machines.
  • 10 Quests - Rare Outlaw Keycard
The Outlaw Chests in backrooms can be opened to get free Bars.
  • 15 Quests - Epic Outlaw Keycard
Premium loadouts are available to purchase from Black Market shopkeepers as a deluxe service for a large number of Bars:
    • Joss' Loadout - Holo Twister AR, Pump & Dump, Rocket Drill, Chug Jug, Gold Ammo Boon, and Greed Boon.
    • Keisha's Loadout - Falcon Eye Sniper, Outlaw Shotgun, Gold Splashes, Chug Jug, Gold Ammo Boon, and Greed Boon.
    • Skillet's Loadout - Sticky Grenade Launcher, Mammoth Pistol, Kneecapper, Chug Jug, Gold Ammo Boon, and Greed Boon.
  • 20 Quests - Legendary Outlaw Keycard
Opening Outlaw Chests in backrooms also drops a Legendary item and Dill Bit.

To use the Fortnite Outlaw Keycard, you simply need to visit one of the Black Markets found near Crime City, Magic Mosses, or Masked Meadow then look for a locked door at the far end, like the one pictured above. Once you have the Common Outlaw Keycard, interact with the door and it will open for you, granting access to the backroom where you can find additional weapons, characters, Outlaw Chests, and more.
