3 new PS Plus games to play this Memorial Day weekend (May 24-27)

Memorial Day is coming up, so you’re probably wondering what games you should play on your PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 over the holiday weekend. Lucky for you, a new batch of games were added to the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra game catalog earlier this week, and it brought plenty of games well worth your time. Three in particular stand out to me; download them today and try them out over the next few days.

The first is a Western from Rockstar Games that needs little introduction and is a must-play if you haven’t experienced it yet. The next is an open-world game that kick-started a new series for Ubisoft and turns 10 next week. Finally, a retro PlayStation 1 game that just came to PlayStation Plus Premium offers up a good time if you enjoy sports or racing games.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar Games

You’ve likely heard of Red Dead Redemption 2 by now. The latest release from Rockstar Games is an impressive open-world Western that pushes the envelope in terms of realism and production value in games. Although it’s a shame that Rockstar has not released a PS5 update for Red Dead Redemption 2 like it has for Grand Theft Auto V, the game still looks great. On the narrative front, it tells a poignant story about how a found family of outlaws fell apart and how honor and respect started to disappear in the final years of what’s considered the Wild West.

From a gameplay standpoint, Red Dead Redemption 2 has the same sandbox feel of all of Rockstar’s games and lets players role-play as a cowboy offline as Arthur Morgan or with friends in Red Dead Online. This game has already sold tens of millions of copies, so there’s a good chance you’ve already played it. If you haven’t, its addition to the PS Plus game catalog and this extended holiday weekend give you the perfect excuse to finally do so.

The PS4 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 is available for PS Plus Extra subscribers. It’s also available on PC and Xbox One.

Watch Dogs

hacking in watch dogs
Ubisoft

Watch Dogs definitely falls into all the tropes now associated with Ubisoft’s open-world games, but it was still the start of a charming series about hackers who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty to incite change. The ability to hack a lot of open-world elements and scan the data of the NPCs you came across was very novel in 2014, and although Watch Dogs‘ two sequels greatly expanded upon the formula the first two games established, there’s still a charm in seeing where those ideas got their start.

This game also holds a special place in my heart because it’s set in Chicago; while its interpretation of the city is far from geographically accurate, it does get the mood and feel of the city right. On May 27, Watch Dogs will celebrate its 10th anniversary, which makes it an even more fitting time to go back and revisit the genesis of one of Ubisoft’s hallmark game series.

The PS4 version of Watch Dogs is available to PS Plus Extra subscribers. The game was also released for PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Wii U.

2Xtreme

Sony Interactive Entertainment

Of the three original PlayStation titles that came to PS Plus Premium with the latest game catalog update, 2Xtreme charmed me the most as it feels pulled straight out of the ’90s. If its title didn’t already indicate that to you, then its charming main menu will as the camera swoops around like you’re doing tricks on a half-pipe with every option picked. Once you actually start up a race, you’ll discover that 2Xtreme is a sports racing game that switches between biking, snowboarding, skateboarding, and rollerblading depending on the race.

Placing first by the end of a race is obviously the main goal, but it’s also fun to perform tricks and attack other racers in order to earn points. It’s certainly very dated by modern standards, but there is a charm to the simplicity of gameplay and visuals, from the quirky main menu to the way the player’s 2D sprite moves through 3D environments. This isn’t an all-time classic from the original PlayStation’s game library, but I still appreciate that games like 2Xtreme are now getting a second life when Sony brings them forward to modern platforms.

PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can check out 2Xtreme’s re-release on PS4 or PS5.

3 new PlayStation Plus games to play this weekend (February 7-9)
A player points a gun at a tiny town in High on Life.

It's the shortest month of the year, but PlayStation is still packing it full of new games joining the PlayStation Plus catalog. The first week is always dedicated to the Essential tier, meaning these games are available to anyone with a subscription. Time is at a premium this month with all the massive upcoming PS5 games, like Monster Hunter Wilds and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, but they aren't here just yet. This weekend, we have a series of games that are perfect holdovers to make the wait for your next giant time investment more bearable. We've got a fantastic co-op game, a shorter game you might be able to beat in a day or two, and a surprising remake you might just fall in love with. If you've got nothing else planned, these are the 3 new PlayStation Plus games you should check out this weekend.
High on Life
HIGH ON LIFE Official Game Trailer

Games very rarely attempt to be funny on purpose. Comedy is already incredibly subjective, and because the player has so much control over the pace of a game it makes it almost impossible for every joke to land as it is intended. High on Life comes from Squanch Games and is one of the rare examples of a game that uses the medium of games to its advantage when crafting jokes. It is a brisk first-person shooter set in a sci-fi world where you become an alien bounty hunter welding living weapons called Gatlians that are all voiced by comedians such as J. B. Smove, Tim Robinson, Betsy Sodaro, Jack Black, and many more. If the humor of Rick and Morty doesn't hit for you, it may not do it for you here either, but if it does then you'll have a blast.

That said, we still need some great games to play without cutting into our budgets. That's where PlayStation Plus comes in. We are in that awkward period between the last batch of Extra and Premium games arriving and the new Essential games for February going live, but there are hundreds of games in the service you might have missed that may have passed you by that are more than worth a weekend of your time. Whether you need something to whet your appetite for Monster Hunter Wilds or a cozy indie game you can complete in a sitting or two, these are the games on PlayStation Plus you should add to your download queue for this weekend.
Sayonara Wild Hearts

Imagine playing through an interactive music video and you will start to get an idea of what Sayonara Wild Hearts is. You will guide your character through vibrant and high-contrast environments with a dream-like aesthetic across an entire tracklist of songs. The gameplay is a blend of rhythm game mechanics where you will need to time button presses, but it is mainly about guiding your character through stages trying to collect hearts to rack up as many points as possible. While you could go for the high scores and secret objectives, you could just as easily vibe out with the game and flow through it like an interactive album in just a sitting or two.

Kratos looks at the Leviathan Axe.

The initial batch of PS Plus games for the Essential tier left many subscribers disappointed with the likes of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League headlining. Thankfully, the second wave of Extra and Premium titles more than makes up for that with some of the best PlayStation 5 games now available as part of the service. The upcoming PS5 games in February are stacked with amazing games, many of which are sequels so we've found the best games you should play this weekend that were just added to PS Plus to prepare for the likes of Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii and Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector.
God of War: Ragnarok
GOD OF WAR: RAGNAROK - Official Trailer

If you somehow missed one of the biggest games on PS5, you no longer have an excuse. God of War: Ragnarok is the definition of a modern AAA game in every way. The graphics are superb, the gameplay meaty and satisfying, and the story compelling and well-acted across the board. This is said to be the end of the Norse chapter of the series, but sets up plenty of new paths the series could eventually take. Plus, you will also be able to play the amazing free Valhalla DLC to really test your mastery of the combat once the main story is done.
