The ninth Logan McRae thriller from the No. 1 bestseller Stuart MacBride.

‘Dark and griping. A riveting page-turner’ Independent on Sunday

One mistake can cost you everything…

When you catch a twisted killer there should be a reward, right? What Acting Detective Inspector Logan McRae gets instead is a ‘development opportunity’ out in the depths of rural Aberdeenshire. Welcome to divisional policing – catching drug dealers, shop lifters, vandals and the odd escaped farm animal.

Then a little girl’s body washes up just outside the sleepy town of Banff, kicking off a massive manhunt. The Major Investigation Team is up from Aberdeen, wanting answers, and they don’t care who they trample over to get them.

Logan’s got enough on his plate keeping B Division together, but DCI Steel wants him back on her team. As his old colleagues stomp around the countryside, burning bridges, Logan gets dragged deeper and deeper into the investigation.

One thing’s clear: there are dangerous predators lurking in the wilds of Aberdeenshire, and not everyone’s going to get out of this alive…

A new Logan McRae book is always a pleasure to look forward to and an even greater pleasure to read and “The Missing and the Dead” is no exception to this rule – once again I was spilling my coffee whilst laughing at the many hilarious yet heartwarming interactions between Logan and Steel (who is quite possibly my favourite character in Crime Fiction ever, only given a run for her money by Jane Casey’s Derwent), sitting on the edge of my seat whilst awaiting results and in this case, thoroughly loving the nitty gritty policing environment Logan finds himself in.

In this instalment the case against a serial killer goes horribly wrong after Logan chooses to accept the importance of saving a life over that of procedure and he finds himself in the back of beyond removing cows from the road and attempting to get the drug dealers under control. When a young child’s body washes up, he finds himself both thrust into the centre of and left on the sidelines of another MIT investigation.

My pure adoration of these stories probably comes from the authors inate ability to create a perfect yin/yang of ironic humour and emotional resonance – whilst also writing a gritty and realistic police procedural. In “The Missing and the Dead” I was fascinated by the many things going on in the background, the things the police on the ground are dealing with, some of them funny some of them not so much, many threads all held together by Logan and co. We have new characters and well loved ones all mixed up here, the whole thing was highly addictive and so terrifically good.

Its Logan’s 9th full outing already. How did that happen? Anyway I’ve been in it from the start and honestly these just get better and better. I always say when I’ve finished that it was my favourite then Mr MacBride writes another and, well, you get the picture…I’m not sure what is next for Logan but I DO know that I’ll be right there with him all the way. If you like your books to tug at your heartstrings whilst making you laugh out loud and often sit on the edge of your seat, then these are for you. Authentic, eminently readable and top of the game when it comes to British crime fiction.

    Highly Recommended.

Weighing in at a massive 611 pages, this 9th book in the Logan McRae series begins as a slightly off putting tome.

McRae is one of modern crime fictions standout characters and this story tells of a week in his life, now demoted back to Sargent and packed off to outer climbs.

As I read through the first 70 or so pages, with little more than Logans day to day beat I started to become a little frustrated as very little was happening but then I begun to understand what Stuart MacBride was aiming for, and that wasn’t a big serial killer novel but it was a real genuine police procedural following McRae as he chased down drug dealers, cash point Heists and Batty old ladies. This was Logan on the beat.

As ever it’s full of dark and black humour that MacBride excels at, pushing the boundaries as close to the edge as he can without causing controversy.

DCI Roberta Steel is here, in her own unmistakable way. She’s as important to these books as Laz is, albeit she’s is completely OTT as she is clearly intended to be.

As I’ve said , to begin I almost felt frustrated but as I read on , frustration turned to becoming engrossed and in fact by the end of the 611 pages I was disappointed it had reached Its conclusion yet happy with the finale that leads me into book 10 with much excitement and a restored faith in a series that has its ups and downs

    Great book
  • Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 November 2015
As a fan of and a keen reader of crime fiction, I have to give not only this book but the previous eight novels in Stuart Macbride's Logan McCrae series 5 out of 5. Once again circumstance conspires against Det Sgt McCrae as we now find him back in uniform working as a sergeant in a rural coastal region of Scotland, when a child's body is washed up on the beach, this prompts a major murder investigation and when a team arrives from Aberdeen headed up by Det Insp Steele Sgt McCrae has his work cut out as he has to deal with several other crimes as well as his former boss dragging him into this investigation and his own Inspector breathing down his neck. Again Macbride has weaved a marvellous story with several sub plots and combined this with his eye for detail as regards the machinations of Police Scotland and the procedural aspects of such investigations and a writng style that keeps me hooked from page to page. Of course I can't review this without mentioning the underlying dark humour that runs through not only this book, but the whole series, in particular in regards to the relationship between Steele and McCrae. These stories would make for a fantastic TV series, why has this not happened? Michelle Gomez would make a brilliant Det Insp Roberta Steele should this ever happen. So if you love gritty crime stories with more bite and more than a little dark humour, this is the book for you, and if this is you're first Logan McCrae novel you really need to read the other eight, but this gets better as book 10 is published in January 2016.

5.0 out of 5 stars My first impressions about this new Logan McRae thriller..,
Reviewed in Italy on 24 July 2017
...and a thriller it is - even it it comes along as an old-fashioned police-procedural.
Our condemned hero Logan McRae has (been) returned to his roots - in the outer- and northernmost place of Scotland: Banff and surroundings. Here he has to prove to the Higher Echelons of the Police Forces of Scotland that he is able to manage by himself a brigade of jolly kinsmen. OK - he manages and even better, he does!
There is only one thing looming above his head: The trial of Stirling the Castrator, the perversion impersonated, a monster so slippery you will want to do something to him You never imagined. That will have a big impact on the life of Logan, who struggles along on lentil soup, only to keep up the high costs of an helping cure for his beloved Samantha, badly hurt in a previous case and almost in vegetable state - 10 points of the Glasgow Coma Scale. And along he goes - up and down the Northern Scotland Coast - teaching all he has to give to his Freshmen and -Women on the job...
Detective Inspector Steel will be there, you will want to strangle her, too, sometimes. In other moments I personally wanted to kiss her! Really, that cowish woman has more loyalty towards her hero Logan than everybody else. Defending him like a lioness would defend only her cubs - I really had to admire that!
Only thing I have to re-read is the ending. And the very end...
All that last chapter on the horrendous crimes against small children - there I would really want a more adapt closure, the present one is highly unsatisfactory for me...
The story was constructed on the finding of the body of a small girl, everything rotates around that - only to finish like that? I personally am deluded - but those are my first impressions. Maybe I will write an an update
First impression: Highly recommended police procedural - good and thrilling. But with some show-down worth a Hollywood movie - only that I doubt it would work like that in reality. Fast-paced and really worth the read. With some real kick-"chess" moments because of those gnomes of "Internal Affairs" ...:-) ..

4.0 out of 5 stars an sich gut
Reviewed in Germany on 2 February 2015
