Individuals who shared actionable information during Hurricane Sandy were significantly more likely to exhibit risk-prone behavior, as measured by a novel Risk Behavior Quotient (RBQ). Using a dataset of 36,595 geo-located tweets from 774 users in the New York area, we found that a higher proportion of actional tweets predicted increased exposure to physical even if overall users ultimately moved toward lower-risk zones. This counterintuitive finding suggests that proactivity-manifested in sharing crisis-relevant content-correlates with greater exposure to risk, possibly due to increased mobility or engagement in hazardous areas. In contrast, a greater number of social media peers was associated with reduced risk exposure. This study builds on appraisal theory, which frames risk-related decisions as outcomes of cognitively mediated emotional and rational evaluations. We extend this theory to digital crisis behavior, distinguishing between emotional and actional appraisals expressed via social media. Tweets were categorized using sentiment analysis and semantic classification, enabling the isolation of affective and behavioral signals. Our methodology combines natural language processing with spatial vector analysis to estimate individual movement paths and risk exposure based on evacuation and flooding maps. The resulting RBQ captures both direction and intensity of risk behavior, allowing us to model how online communication reflects and predicts real-world risk engagement during natural disasters.

El presente estudio, pretende realizar un análisis acerca de la incidencia del uso de internet en el tiempo libre de los niños, tomando como referencia a estudiantes del Sexto Año de Educación Básica de la Unidad Educativa Nuestra Familia. Para llegar a las conclusiones pertinentes se ha investigado acerca de conceptos de Internet, tiempo libre, usos pedagógicos, influencia psicológica y los e-derechos de los niños entre otros puntos. Debido a los avances tecnológicos y la vinculación de estos a la sociedad de manera inminente, Internet adquiere la dimensión de derecho para el uso de los niños, quienes se enfrentan a varios riesgos identificados en la navegación por las redes: Cyberbullying, sexting, grooming, etc. La adicción y la encapsulación en el mundo que provee Internet hace que cada vez más se pierda el contacto cara a cara y es evidente la pérdida de la socialización en la vida real. El uso de internet en los niños puede encontrarse con los peligros antes citados, si no existe una normación adecuada para su uso y una constante supervisión de los contenidos que contemplan los "nativos de la red". Las reglas para su uso deben ser claras, comenzando desde casa, mientras que la enseñanza, para optimizar este instrumento en pro de su educación, debe sentar las bases y la guía que permita un buen nivel de conocimiento, previniendo los riesgos de la navegación. Los distintos gobiernos, los padres y las instituciones educativas, están llamados a formar un fuerte para la vigilancia y buen uso que los niños hagan de Internet.

The purpose of this paper is to study trust and engagement in virtual ecosystems. The specific case of Disney Spain is reviewed, on the website of the online store shopDisney.es, and on the @DisneySpain profiles on Instagram and Twitter. For this purpose, a measurement system is proposed based on the design of two instruments with registration and scope indicators. Direct observation and the subsequent content analysis determine that the company adequately manages strategies to generate trust and engagement. The diagnosis, carried out through the indicators, made it possible to identify the presence of mechanisms that pursue reliability in content, brand image and social interaction, in addition to certain shortcomings or needs for improvement in issues related to the web usability and communication with users.

This paper investigates human dynamics in a large online dating site with 3,000 new users daily who stay in the system for 3 months on the average. The daily activity is also quite large such as 500,000 massage transactions, 5,000 photo uploads, and 20,000 votes. The data investigated has 276, 210 male and 483, 963 female users. Based on the activity that they made, there are clear distinctions between men and women in their pattern of behavior. Men prefer lower, women prefer higher qualifications in their partner.

Workforce development is an important aspect of evidence-informed decision making (EIDM) interventions. The structure of formal and informal social networks can influence, and be influenced, by the implementation of EIDM interventions. In a mixed methods study we assessed the outcomes of a targeted training intervention to promote EIDM among the staff in three public health units in Ontario, Canada. This report focuses on the qualitative phase of the study in which key staff were interviewed about the process of engagement in the intervention, communications during the intervention, and social consequences. Senior managers identified staff to take part in the intervention. Engagement was a top-down process determined by the way organizational leaders promoted EIDM and the relevance of staff's jobs to EIDM. The present study intended to find Facebook addiction and its relation with academic performance of university students from Pakistan. Sample comprised of eighty students (n=80) in total whom are purposefully selected and equally divided according to gender. The universe was public sector higher learning institute named as The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, Pakistan. Cross-sectional survey research design was employed. Data were collected by use of Bergen Facebook addition scale. Data were analyzed from SPSS (21.0), descriptive statistics, correlation and regression analysis were computed to test the hypotheses. Results depict significant negative relationship between Facebook addiction and academic performance of students (β = -.907, t = -4.554). Conclusively, female students consume more time to use Facebook as compare to male students; hence, male students exhibit better academic performance. Online technologies have facilitated the development of Virtual Communities of Practice (virtual CoPs) to support health professionals collaborate online to share knowledge, improve performance and support the spread of innovation and best practices. Research, however, shows that many virtual CoPs do not achieve their expected potential because online interaction among healthcare professionals is generally low. Focusing on health visitors, who are UK qualified midwives or nurses who have undertaken additional qualifications as specialist public health workers in the community, the paper examines the factors that influence online interaction among health visitors collaborating to share knowledge and experience in a virtual CoP. The paper makes suggestions for how to improve online interaction among health professionals in virtual CoPs by increasing the size of membership in order to take advantage of both posting and viewing contributions, facilitating moderation to improve networking among geographically dispersed members groups and improving the topic relevance in order to stimulate contributions.

Abstract.- The human society is a very complex system; still, there are several non-trivial, general features. One type of them is the presence of power-law distributed quantities in temporal statistics. In this Letter, we focus on the origin of power-laws in rating of movies. We present a systematic empirical exploration of the time between two consecutive ratings of movies (the interevent time). At an aggregate level, we find a monotonous relation between the activity of individuals and the power-law exponent of the interevent-time distribution. At an individual level, we observe a heavy-tailed distribution for each user, as well as a negative correlation between the activity and the width of the distribution. We support these findings by a similar data set from mobile phone text-message communication. Recommendation for public radio is a challenging area. In contrast to music recommendation, which has been intensively discussed in research as well as in practice, recommendation for radio has some special additional challenges as it mixes diverse formats, such as news, articles, audio dramas, biographies, etc. Focusing on the interaction design of a radio player, we bring up and discuss these special challenges and find that in a radio recommender context, optimal interaction design has conflicting issues with optimal algorithmic design.

Ubiquitous information technologies like RFID allow for immediate, extensive and fine-grained capture of real world information. Scalable and efficient networks for exchange of this vast amount of information amongst companies are crucial for the economic exploitation of benefits of ubiquitous information technologies. Existing networks bear several limitations like risks of single-point-offailures or bottlenecks, unequally distributed power and burdens as well as inflexibility through stringent structures and formats. In particular there is a need for improving the scalability of solutions and ensuring autonomy of network participants. In this paper we introduce a Peer-to-Peer-based architecture for exchanging distributed information, which are shared among participants of a supply chain facilitated with ubiquitous information technologies. This architecture builds on the wellestablished EPCglobal standards, but can be implemented as an autonomous network. Unlike other architectures it does not need central coordination mechanisms, because it is based on self-organizing Peer-to-Peer protocols. We argue that our architecture supports business processes especially of small and medium-sized enterprises better than other architectures. We provide a discussion about requirements for solutions and a simulation-based analysis of the proposed architecture.

Global child health Uganda a b s t r a c t Recent initiatives in global health have emphasized universal coverage of essential health services. Surgical conditions play a critical role in child health in resource-poor areas. This article discusses (1) the spectrum of pediatric surgical conditions and their treatment; (2) relevance to recent advances in global surgery; (3) challenges to the prioritization of surgical care within child health, and possible solutions; (4) a case example from a resource-poor area (Uganda) illustrating some of these concepts; and (5) important child health initiatives with which surgical services should be integrated. Pediatric surgery providers must lead the effort to prioritize children's surgery in health systems development.

This study examined the long-term predictors of social support satisfaction among HIV-positive young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM). Data were collected across three waves between October 2012 and November 2014 as part of the baseline assessment from Project nGage, a preliminary efficacy randomized control study examining the role of social support in improving HIV care among YBMSM. The sample included 92 YBMSM aged 18-29. Major results controlling for age, education and intervention effects indicated that psychological health, social network size, and education at baseline predicted differences in social support satisfaction at Wave 3, with no significant effects based on length of HIV diagnosis. Therefore, interventions that are intended to promote the quality of life for YBMSM and their engagement and retention in HIV care must focus on their psychological health concerns and network size.

La expansión acelerada de las tecnologías digitales suscita desafíos emergentes y específicos en torno a la inclusión, la no discriminación y la violencia digital, en particular para poblaciones históricamente marginadas por sistemas de opresión interconectados como el colonialismo, el racismo y el patriarcado. Este estudio exploratorio interseccional y decolonial, realizado en 8 países de América Latina, busca comprender como las legislaciones actuales abordan estas problemáticas en el ámbito digital y examina las percepciones de las comunidades afectadas respecto al uso de tecnologías digitales y la construcción de identidades en espacios virtuales. El análisis se enfoca en el potencial del metaverso como una nueva esfera digital que, diseñada desde perspectivas inclusivas y decoloniales del sur global, podría ofrecer oportunidades para la representación y participación activa de dichas comunidades.

We explore a class of task allocation mechanisms that are incremental and can be tuned to the computational resource limitations of agents. Our focus is on distributed task and resource allocation problems involving coalitions of cooperative agents that must negotiate among themselves on the distribution of tasks. Our emphasis is on the design of mechanisms with desirable real-time and dynamic properties. We describe preliminary work in four areas: the design of what we call time-bounded commitment networks that are extensions of task-auctions and contract nets and that support a notion of reciprocal commitment anytime algorithms for combinatorial task allocation that take into account both positive and negative task interactions, organizational frameworks for e cient task allocation in highly dynamic domains involving hundreds of agents, and logical tools for analyzing dynamic emergent properties of agent societies.

Background. Online platforms offer opportunities for support in changing lifestyle and taking responsibility for one’s health, but engaging patients with type 2 diabetes is challenging. Previous studies have shown that patients interested in platforms were more often male, younger, and higher educated. This study aims to investigate differences in clinical and psychological characteristics between users and nonusers of a newly developed platform.Methods. A prospective study started in the Drenthe region of Netherlands. Participants in the study concerning quality of care and quality of life were additionally invited to use the platform.Results. 633 patients were registered after they opted for platform use. Of these patients, 361 (57.0%) never logged on, 184 (29.1%) were labeled “curious” users, and 88 (13.9%) were identified as “active” users. The rise of social media has redefined not only communication but also the very architecture of global power. In 2023, 67\% of the world's population is connected to digital platforms (\textit{Reuters Institute}), creating an ecosystem where democracy and authoritarianism coexist in perpetual tension. This article argues that social media operates as a "technological duality": while amplifying marginalized voices, as seen in the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement in Iran (2023), it also serves authoritarian regimes, such as in China, where the social credit system monitors 1.4 billion citizens (\textit{Freedom House, 2023}).

Her research and teaching explores the educational and occupational trajectories of under-represented minorities, including Latina/os, English learners, and immigrant and second-generation students. Her applied research also includes the design and evaluation of different programs and policies targeted to under-represented students. In 2010, Rios-Aguilar collaborated with the UCLA Civil Rights Project on the Arizona Educational Equity Project. Most recently, she and her colleague Dr. Regina Deil-Amen, received funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to conduct the first study to assess how community colleges adopt and use social media technology for strategic purposes.

This research measures the charge of values transmitted by the 4 main Spanish banks: CaixaBank, Banco de Sabadell, Banco de Santander and BBVA, through an on-line procedure based on reception tests. It starts from a deep contextual and theoretical approach to research in social values, from an ethical, psychosocial, sociotechnical and communicological perspective. The test consisted of an online questionnaire to 147 participants (87 Spanish and 60 Latin American), who watched 4 advertising spots shown on You-tube and broadcasted on open TV by the 4 main Spanish banks, all were aired during April 2018. The study locates the values ​​transmitted by each bank spot, compares them and measures their respective transmission capability. With the support of in-depth interviews with the heads of communication of the 4 banks, our study also explores the coherence that banks achieve between their strategic communication and the values ​​transmitted by their spots.

Social network sites (SNSs) like Twitter continue to attract users, many of whom turn to these spaces for social support for serious illnesses like cancer. Building on literature that explored the functionality of online spaces for health-related social support, we propose a typology that situates this type of support in an SNS-based open cancer community based on the type (informational or emotional) and the direction (expression or reception) of support. A content analysis applied the typology to a 2-year span of Twitter messages using the popular hashtag "#stupidcancer." Given that emotions form the basis for much of human communication and behavior, including aspects of social support, this content analysis also examined the relationship between emotional expression and online social support in tweets about cancer. Furthermore, this study looked at the various ways in which Twitter allows for message sharing across a user's entire network (not just among the cancer community). This work thus begins to lay the conceptual and empirical groundwork for future research testing the effects of various types of social support in open, interactive online cancer communities.

At a time when news organizations are struggling to grab the attention of audiences in a media-saturated environment, social networking sites (SNS) have created novel opportunities for journalists to connect with followers online-raising questions about how types of social media use might be associated with forging greater connection with users. Just as satire has proven a potent force for attracting audiences to fake news TV programs, it's reasonable to consider that humor might be an emerging tool for connection in social media spaces where journalists increasingly conduct their work. Through a content analysis of more than 22,000 tweets (or microblog posts), this study examines the extent to which the 430 most-followed journalists on Twitter are using humor-and how such use is associated with other forms of engagement on Twitter. Findings indicate that a journalist's use of humor is closely associated with sharing opinion and personal life details, and engaging in interpersonal discussion. Moreover, the use of humor is positively related to a journalist's level of activity on Twitter, suggesting that journalists who become more accustomed to this social space are more apt to adopt its milieu of informality, conversation, and humor. Finally, journalists from less elite news organizations tend to use humor more frequently. These and other findings are discussed in light of challenges facing the journalism field as it negotiates questions of participation and professionalism in digital media spaces. Given the increasing uptake of the social network site Facebook, mass communication researchers have begun focusing on what drives people to use the site and what kinds of information they interact with. Perhaps because of the relative novelty of Facebook, little research has scratched beneath the surface to explore why people engage in certain functions the site offers. Attention to these engagements and the motivations behind them could help improve current mass communication approaches, especially in critical industries such as news media, where traditional models are struggling to evolve. This study explored user motivations for engaging in link-sharing through Facebook, uncovering motives that extend beyond those of previous research. The findings also consider the influence of those motivations on linking frequency, and link content, introducing motivations that add to current viewpoints of social network sites as information hubs. It also provides new media researchers and practitioners with novel insight into an increasingly important Facebook behavior.

As journalists and audiences increasingly interact via social media spaces online, scholars have begun to explore the varying forms of information and relational exchanges between them. Building on an emerging thread of research that examines the potential role of reciprocity in such encounters, this study examines how reciprocity, as a key ingredient of online communities, might stimulate audiences’ consumption and creation of content, including news content. A national survey finds that, while personal beliefs in reciprocity ( perceptions ) may predict news consumption, it is reciprocity in practice on social media that is associated with not only news consumption but content creation, both for news and in general. This first-of-its-kind empirical study indicates that scholars may be correct in theorizing a role for reciprocity in the news interaction process, much as in social media and society more broadly.

Keeping FOSS developers motivated is a challenging problem, and their motivation levels can affect the team's productivity and satisfaction, leading to higher or lower productivity. Using reputation systems as a motivator has become the de--facto standard for many online communities, rewarding user's activity through badges of honor or achievement levels. Few open source software communities have successfully used a well--rounded reputation system to motivate developers, instead rewarding only one or a small set of activities. Very little research has been done in the area of using reputation systems to motivate people to increase their participation in open source software projects. This thesis studies Beaversource; a mix of code--hosting and social networking available to students, staff and faculty at Oregon State University, and our experiment with reputation systems as a means of motivating programmers. A survey was sent to 1,100+ Beaversource users at Oregon State University to gather demographics, and data on the use of Beaversource. One hundred users responded. Based on survey feedback, a reputation system was put in place. After the karma system was available to users, five students were interviewed to gather more information regarding their satisfaction with Beaversource and the karma system. Users reported that the reputation system worked to motivate them. Interviewees would like to see the karma system expanded with better icons and increased participation in the social networking side. Students also requested more flexibility in the karma system such as ability to affect each other's karma and give special badges to members of their project.

As part of the Linking Open Data initiative many (community) platforms have made their data freely available in recent years. In these systems valuable information from the music domain can be found. We use this data for contentbased music recommendations thus not requiring expensive metadata annotations from domain experts. In this demo paper we present a system that uses data from the Freebase platform to describe music artists. The artists are represented using metadata profiles that characterize different aspects of their works such as genres and instrumentations but also collaborations with other artists. The system uses a Lucene index for content-based artist recommendations aiming at Web-scalability.

An online professional network for veterinarians, veterinary students, veterinary educationalists, and ICT (Information and Communication Technology) educationalists is being developed under the EU (European Union) Lifelong Learning Programme. The network uses Web 2.0, a term used to describe the new, more interactive version of the Internet, and includes tools such as wikis, blogs, and discussion boards. Focus groups conducted with qualified and student veterinarians within the project's five founding countries (The Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom, Hungary, Romania) demonstrated that online professional communities can be valuable for accessing information and establishing contacts. The construction of online identity, though examined in other disciplines, has not yet been approached theoretically in the communication scholarship. Online identities cannot be understood as linear or static as some identity theory presents. Online identities need to be understood as continually changing representations, never fixed in one position, and perpetually in a state of assembly. Identity research within the communication literature has focused on specific characteristics of the medium (e.g., anonymity) and the effects of those characteristics on the outcomes of the communicative act rather than focusing on the communicative process of identity construction itself. In other words, past research examined the bookends of the online communicative act -this project focuses on the communicative processes in order to explain the dynamics of online identity (re)creation. In this light online identity assembly theory (OIA) serves 1) as a response to the limitation of current online identity research within the communication discipline and 2) as a way for the communication discipline to engage this developing and ever-important area of study. OIA offers a new direction for the investigation and interrogation of online identities, recognizing how the interrelation of race, class, gender, and social position in online social communities overtly and covertly influence how we assemble ourselves within online spaces. Facebook profile construction processes are interrogated as a test application of OIA theory, demonstrating how OIA theory can contribute to identity research by looking at the interrelationship of these concepts in relation to one another rather than as separate elements within identity.

This paper presents a Food Sharing Platform that connects people who have extra food with those in need. The platform is built with simple web technologies and is designed to reduce food waste while strengthening community bonds. By providing an easy-to-use system for food donation and sharing, this project not only addresses environmental issues but also supports local communities. Early feedback shows that the platform is user-friendly and effective, with the potential to be scaled up and adapted to different regions.

Le attivita istituzionali del CASPUR si rivolgono alle universita consorziate e al Ministero dell’Istruzione, dell’Universita e della Ricerca (MIUR). Il Consorzio e presente presso la sede del MIUR di Piazza Kennedy da oltre quindici anni, garantendo, con adeguate competenze e professionalita, la continuita dei servizi informatici di base e lo sviluppo dell’infrastruttura ICT. Il supporto del CASPUR presso il MIUR e organizzato in due aree funzionali: l’area Sistemi e quella Sviluppo Software. La prima si occupa delle attivita di gestione, manutenzione e presidio della sala macchine e provvede alla connettivita e alla sicurezza dell’infrastruttura di rete locale. L’area funzionale Sviluppo Software, invece, si occupa delle attivita di redazione tecnica dei siti web del MIUR, della realizzazione di applicazioni software e offre consulenza e formazione agli utenti del Ministero sull’uso dei prodotti in dotazione.

A social multiplier effect is a social interaction in which the behavior of a person in a social network varies with the normative behavior of others in the network, also known as an endogenous interaction. Policies and intervention efforts can harness social multiplier effects because, in theory, interventions on a subset of individuals will have "spillover effects" on other individuals in the network. This study investigates potential social multiplier effects for violence in middle schools, and whether there is evidence for a social multiplier effect transmitted from girls to boys. This research explained new economic models in the digital music industry in view of cultural, technological, and sociological aspects. The importance of local entrepreneurship, as well as global markets, were accessed. There have been many developments in digital music in the past two decades. These developments have affected relations between the digital economy and music technology. The study is mainly focused on the Turkish music market. Why the subscription and bundling models are on the rise? How does an economic merger between telecommunication companies and digital music services work? What are the effects of the recent developments in technology, in particular smartphones on music industry? The partnership of Turkcell, the largest GSM operator in Turkey, and one of the top 5 in Europe and Turkish digital music service Fizy was exemplified. Thus, the significance of local markets in the digital era, expectations of the audiences, the applicability of streaming, and bundling economic models in Turkey have been examined.

Market design is concerned with the creation of an arena where buyers and sellers can meet and a specification of the rules by which they execute trades. The challenges of the market design is to develop an efficient market and at the same time maximize the revenue of the market maker. This paper discusses the design and features of specialist Avalon which won the Fall 2006 CAT class tournament of Agent Based E-commerce course at UT-Austin. We also present controlled experiments and tournament results demonstrating salient features of Avalon.
