Naomi, a 93 year old woman, was hospitalized to undergo surgery after breaking a hip bone, and for rehabilitation in which she regained her ability to walk. She returned to live at home, and after some time raised the subject of dying in a casual conversation with Ruth, her daughter, wanting to express her wishes about future medical care. Ruth had difficulty taLking about the matter, but after Naomi mentioned it once more, she came for a consultation. The consuLtation process ended with Naomi signing a medical care proxy. The paper describes the templates of advance directives and proxy under the Dying Patient Law, 2005, and argues that they impose a medico-legal construction on the patient's will and are not appropriate for the psychosocial process of advance care planning. The paper also describes the medical proxy form under the Patients Rights Law, 1996, and the "living will" of the Israeli Society to Live and Die with Dignity.

This research note addresses the challenge of how to optimally measure acquiescence response style (ARS) and extreme response style (ERS). This is of crucial importance in assessing results from studies that have tried to identify antecedents of response styles (such as age, education level, national culture). Using survey data from the Netherlands, a comparison is made between the traditional method and a more recently proposed method of measuring ARS and ERS (i.e., the convergent validity across both methods is assessed). The traditional method is based on an ad hoc set of related items. The alternative method uses a set of randomly sampled items to optimize heterogeneity and representativeness of the items. It is found that the traditional method may lead to response style measures that are suboptimal for estimating levels of ARS and ERS as well as relations of ARS and ERS with other variables (like hypothesized antecedents). Recommendations on how to measure response styles are provided.

Marine fungi are an ecological rather than a taxonomic group and comprise an estimated 1500 species, excluding those that form lichens. They occur in most marine habitats and generally have a pantropical or pantemperate distribution. Marine fungi are major decomposers of woody and herbaceous substrates in marine ecosystems. Their importance lies in their ability to aggressively degrade lignocellulose. They may be important in the degradation of dead animals and animal parts. Marine fungi are important pathogens of plants and animals and also form symbiotic relationships with other organisms. The eect of disturbances on marine fungi is poorly investigated. Keystone marine species may exist, especially in mutualistic symbioses. However, as many saprophytes appear to carry out the same function simultaneously, they may be functionally redundant. The need for a concerted eort to investigate the biodiversity and role of marine fungi globally and on as many substrata as possible is presented.

Theoretical schemes for laser cooling with nanoparticles have been presented and comprehensively investigated. It is shown that specially designed samples based on nanoparticles can be used to improve the process of laser cooling of solids. One of the proposed schemes is based on lead salt colloidal quantum dots (QDs) doped in a glass host. The second one is based on Tm 3+ doped oxy fluoride glass ceramic. It has been shown that lead salt colloidal QDs doped in a glass host can operate as artificial atoms. Very short (microsecond range) radiative lifetimes of the excited 1Sh level of PbSe QDs in comparison with the relatively long (millisecond) radiative lifetime of rare-earth (RE) ions allows the cooling process to be accelerated and to use new hosts with relatively high maximum phonon energy, which have so far been considered not suitable for cooling with RE ions. It has been shown that the second sample, which is based on Tm 3+ doped oxy fluoride glass ceramic provides the unique combination of high chemical and mechanical stability of the oxide glass, which is important for a number of applications, and the low phonon energy of the fluoride nano-crystals, which trap a majority of Tm 3+ ions participating in the cooling process. This is highly beneficial for laser cooling of solids, since the effective embedding of rare-earth ions in the crystalline phase with low phonon energy provides a high quantum efficiency for the 3 F 4 → 3 H 6 transition involved in the cooling cycle in the Tm 3+ ions, which is a key parameter for laser cooling of solids. QUEM SÃO AS MULHERES DAS POLÍTICAS PARA AS MULHERES NO BRASIL. VOL. 1 "O Feminismo Estatal-participativo Brasileiro", 2018

In this paper we present a domain specific language (DSL) for Extended Entity-Relationship (EER) data model approach, named EERDSL. EERDSL is a part of our Multi-Paradigm Information System Modeling Tool (MIST) that provides EER database schema specification at the conceptual level and its transformation into a relational data model, or a class model. EERDSL modeling concepts are specified by Ecore, one of the commonly used approaches to create meta-models. In the paper we present both textual and graphical notations of EERDSL. Since only few modeling constraints may be described at the level of abstract syntax, we use Object Constraint Language (OCL) to specify complex validation rules for EER models.
The Non-explosive expansion material (NEEM) is a method more environmentally friendly than the harmful conventional rock fracturing techniques. However, it is slower and very costly. Thus, any means of economizing their use is very desirable. This paper investigates the crack growth between two neighboring holes of a gneiss rock internally pressurized by NEEM mixed with water with the aim to evaluate the influence of holes spacing (center-to-center distance), on the initiation and growth of cracks. Field experimental results reveal that crack starts earlier and grows faster with increasing ambient temperature. But when the ambient temperature is above 28˚C, the NEEM is "blown out" of the holes. At these ambient temperatures, the surrounding rocks are hot and cannot dissipate efficiently the heat generated by the hydration reaction. The best filling time was found to be in the evening when the daily hot temperature has drooped. The time to first crack increases as hole diameter decreases. The 3D numerical modeling and simulation of crack growth between two neighboring holes internally pressurized by NEEM using ABAQUS (XFEM/CZM) software shows a good agreement with the theoretical and experimental results. How to cite this paper: TiamFigure 1. Rock fracturing mechanism between two neighboring holes filled with NEEM (Natanzi et al., 2016).

While a number of studies have stressed the crucial role of social networks for participation in social movements, scholars have generally overlooked the issue of how networks affect individual behaviors and have simply acknowledged the existence of a link between the actors' previous insertion in social networks and their readiness to take part in collective action. In this paper, I propose a conceptual clarification of the role of social networks for individual participation in social movements. First, I argue that networks play a multiple role in the process leading to participation and that they intervene at different moments along this process. Networks socialize and build individual identities (socializing function), offer individuals who are culturally sensitive to a specific political issue an opportunity to participate (recruitment function), and shape individual preferences before individuals decide to join a movement (shaping function on actors' decisions). To specify the functions of social networks allows us to disentangle the mechanisms at work in the process of participation and to integrate structural and rationalist theories, which are considered by most scholars as offering opposed explanations of individual participation in social movements. I confront my hypotheses with both quantitative (survey) and qualitative data (life histories). By combining these two methods we can clarify the multiple role of networks on individual participation while emphasizing at the same time the impact of meanings on this process.

Abstract The topic addressed in this thesis concerns the relationship between spatial knowledge and information protection in a mobile setting. The proliferation of mobile devices in an increasingly connected world raises growing concern for information security and privacy. For example, sensitive data recorded in corporate and networked information systems can be accessed from uncontrolled locations, downloaded on mobile terminals and disclosed to unauthorized third parties.

Introduction: Smoking persists as a global and relevant health problem being one of the major risk factors to non-communicable diseases and early death. Studies on the association between smoking and health related quality of life (HRQL) are scarce in Brazil and Latin America. The aim of this study was to analyze the HRQL according to smoking status on adults aged 20 to 59 years, living in Campinas, Brazil. Method: It is a population-based cross-sectional study, carried out with data from the Campinas Health Survey developed in 2008/2009. The dependent variables were the eight scales and the two components—physical (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) of the instrument SF-36, version 2. Means and confidence intervals of the SF-36 scale scores and components were estimated according to smoking (never smokers, former smokers, current smokers) and nicotine dependence (mild, moderate, heavy). Results: The sample comprised 957 individuals (mean age of 37.5 years). Comparing with never smokers, smokers had lower score means in all SF-36 scales, except in physical functioning and role-physical; among the former smokers, lower scores were observed in vitality and mental health. A reduction of the MCS score was observed among smokers and former smokers among men; but in the female population, this reduction was observed only in smokers compared with never smokers. According to the nicotine dependence, it was observed an increasing reduction in MCS scores from mild, to moderate and heavy smokers. Conclusion: Smoking is significantly and negatively associated with HRQL in the studied population. The results point out the importance of the strategic policies against smoking, to reduce morbidity and premature death, but also to increase the quality of life and well-being. It is also important to consider the mental health dimension, since that best mental health can be relevant to promote healthier behaviors.
