Sean M. Wright, the Literary History of Mr. Sherlock Holmes how the appearance of a brilliant London detective, who kept his cigars in the coal-scuttle, his unanswered correspondence pinned to his mantlepiece with a jack-knife, who occasionally injected himself with a 7% solution of cocaine, became the preeminent investigative genius by whom all other detectives are measured.
The Cinematic History of Mr. Sherlock Holmes
Beginning in 1901 to his latest appearance in 2003, more celluloid has been used to record the exploits of Sherlock Holmes than for any other person in the history of the world, outside of Jesus Christ. This lively discussion features incidents from the lives and careers of William Gillette, Basil Rathbone, Peter Cushing, and Jeremy Brett – along with Christopher Lee, Larry Hagman, and George C. Scott and includes a showing of scenes from many Holmes films.
Steel True, Blade Straight – The Life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
The creator of Sherlock Holmes was an amazing man of intellect and action. After a career as a whaler, he became a doctor and one of the most prolific writers of the last 19th century.
His characters continue to be read, enjoyed, and discussed. But the man who created Sherlock Holmes was, himself, involved with several real life criminal cases.
How he came to solve them is a story that’s anything but elementary.
