Newspapers have had a tough row to hoe in the new millennium, with consolidations, layoffs, downsizings, bankruptcies, and, to borrow a meme from the Jimmy Carter administration in the 1970s, a general “malaise.”
But back in Carter’s day, newspapers were going gangbusters—one, the Washington Post, greatly contributed to the downfall of President Richard Nixon, a dogged and successful politician until his vengeful paranoia, vicious pettiness, flamboyant demagoguery, disdain for his own constituents, and inherent shadiness forced him out of office.
One would be forgiven for a sense of deja vu during recent years. But on the bright side, to quote that eternal sage Yogi Berra, the Village Voice is also part of the current “deja vu all over again,” and we have the print issues—the first since 2017—to prove it.
