WWE 2K22 will launch in March 2022, which represents a five-month delay from the franchise’s normal October launch window. 2K Sports and the WWE announced the new launch period during SummerSlam 2021 on Saturday; the game was first revealed at WrestleMania 37 in April.

A hype trailer (above) didn’t list platforms or a date more specific than next March. The game will launch more than two years after the most recent entry in the series, WWE 2K20, which was the first game developed entirely in-house by 2K Sports and Visual Concepts.

That game launched in a nominally finished state, but it was riddled with gameplay bugs and technical issues that forced the cancellation of a 2020 edition while developers regrouped. WWE 2K Battlegrounds, by NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 developer Saber Interactive, was left to tide over fans last fall.

The last WWE 2K game to not launch in October was WWE 2K15, whose PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions followed those consoles’ predecessors by a month. WWE ’12, published by THQ, also launched in November 2011. The series, which 2K Sports took on after THQ was liquidated in early 2013, dates back to 2004’s Smackdown vs. Raw on PlayStation 2.

2K Sports said it will have more to share about WWE 2K22 in January. In addition to the trailer, the label provided two stills of the wrestler Edge, captured in-engine.
