Ban assault weapons; raise purchase age for all guns to 21
I am calling for a gun safety package that bans assault weapons, raises the legal purchase age for all guns to 21, institutes a 14-day waiting period, increasing penalties for felons in possession of a firearm, keeps guns out of parks and
playgrounds, and allows law enforcement officers to file Extreme Risk Protection Orders to keep firearms away from people who are a danger to themselves or others. These are common-sense measures that will save lives.

Ban assault weapons; civil suits against manufacturers
That is why I am calling for a ban on assault weapons. I am calling for an end to the state loophole on straw purchases of guns because people with a history of violence should not be able to get a firearm. I am calling for safe storage reforms that
impose penalties on anyone who fails to secure an unattended firearm and leaves it accessible to an unsupervised minor. And I am calling for legislation that would allow victims of gun violence to bring civil suits against firearm manufacturers.

Prioritize common-sense reforms
Our Department of Health will conduct a thorough study of gun violence, but right now we will also take action where we know we must. I expect to sign a bill that will ban those convicted of assault from purchasing or possessing a gun, I expect
strengthened background checks, and I expect tighter restrictions on safekeeping to ensure children do not have access to guns in the home. With common-sense reforms, we can build a state where people who should not have firearms, don't, simple as that.

Strengthen background checks; ban assault weapons
Q: Support more restrictive Gun Control legislation? Restrict semi-automatic weapons?
Michelle Lujan-Grisham (D): Yes. Strengthen background checks, ban assault weapons & high-capacity magazines. Ban anyone convicted of domestic
violence from buying guns.
Steve Pearce (R): No. "I don't think Gun Control legislation works." Restrictions would divert resources to "cataloguing & confiscating the guns of law-abiding citizens."
