William Earl has been promoted to executive digital director of Variety. He oversees all digital editorial operations for the venerable entertainment business news brand, and he steers Variety‘s coverage of horror and emerging genre fare.

Earl is based in New York and reports to Cynthia Littleton and Ramin Setoodeh, Variety‘s co-editors-in-chief. He has been with the venerable entertainment business news brand since 2020, signing on as a consultant before he was quickly recruited to serve as editor of Variety.com.

“William Earl has transformed Variety‘s digital operations since he joined us five years ago. He’s helped take our digital audience to new heights. And he’s a strong leader and a seasoned journalist. He’s earned this promotion through hard work and dedication,” said Littleton and Setoodeh.

Earl joined Variety parent company PMC in 2011, serving as director of digital development before returning to the newsroom. Before that, he was digital director of IndieWire, senior digital editor of PMC Brands and executive editor of HollywoodLife.com.

A native of Maine, Earl graduated from Ithaca College with degrees in politics and journalism. He is the father of 18-month-old twins, Ellis and Sonny, with his wife, Glamour deputy editor Anna Moeslein.
