Samuel L. Jackson to host June 4 broadcast

NEW YORK — Leonardo DiCaprio may have been snubbed by the Oscars in the best actor category, but he was not forgotten by the audience of MTV, which nominated the “Titanic” heartthrob for best male performance for the 1998 MTV Movie Awards.

DiCaprio, along with “Titanic” co-star Kate Winslet, also was nominated in the best kiss and best onscreen duo categories for the MTV awards, which will be taped May 30 in Santa Monica for airing at 9 p.m. June 4.

Samuel L. Jackson will host the event this year, announced MTV president Judy McGrath and Joel Gallen, the producer of this year’s show.

The event, now in its seventh year, has developed into one of MTV’s highest-rated shows. Last year’s movie awards, hosted by Mike Myers, earned a 3.9 rating, according to Nielsen Media Research, more than five times the average MTV primetime audience.

The nominations for the awards were chosen through a national poll of MTV viewers, who also determine the winners. Viewers can cast their votes via a special telephone number that will appear on the cabler, on MTV Online and at Blockbuster Video stores from Thursday through May 15.
