MEXICO CITY – Fabricio Werdum, Kelvin Gastelum, Henry Briones and Guido Cannetti each earned $50,000 bonuses for their performances at Saturday’s UFC 180 event.
Werdum and Gastelum won “Performance of the Night” bonuses, while Briones and Cannetti earned “Fight of the Night” honors.
UFC President Dana White announced the winners at the post-event news conference, which MMAjunkie attended. The UFC boss also added that Ricardo Lamas can also expect to see a little extra cash coming his way.
“I just want to throw in there that Ricardo Lamas will be taken care of, too,” White said. “It was very close. You were in the running, buddy.”
Werdum (19-5-1 MMA, 7-2 UFC) got a little bit lit up by Mark Hunt (10-9-1 MMA, 5-3-1 UFC) in the main event interim heavyweight title fight. But in the second round, the Brazilian cracked Hunt with a perfectly placed knee to the chin that dropped the New Zealander. And with a few bombs on the ground, Werdum became the new interim champion.
In the co-main event, Gastelum (10-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) stunned Jake Ellenberger (29-9 MMA, 8-5 UFC) with a first-round rear-naked choke. Ellenberger had position reversed on him on the ground, and within seconds Gastelum had taken his back to lock in the choke.
Briones (16-4 MMA, 1-0 UFC) and Cannetti (6-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) had a spirited fight in the second bout of the night. The “TUF: Latin America” competitors slugged it out early with Cannetti seeming to get the better of things in the standup game. But Briones caught him in the second round, then stopped him with a rear-naked choke.
UFC 180 took place at Mexico City Arena. The main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
