Kanu celebrates his seventh goal of the season
|
Portsmouth continued their impressive start to the season with an easy victory over Reading at Fratton Park.
A first-half own goal by Brynjar Gunnarsson after 10 minutes from an in-swinging corner from Pedro Mendes set Pompey on their way.
Nwankwo Kanu headed in a second for the home side after the half-time break.
Mendes volleyed a third from the edge of the box, with Reading's solitary response a stabbed finish from Kevin Doyle with six minutes to go.
It was Reading's fourth consecutive loss, and boss Steve Coppell will not be encouraged by a defence who looked nervous throughout.
The Royals have now conceded 12 goals in four games.

Both teams were looking to bounce back from midweek Carling Cup defeats and it was the hosts who dominated from the first whistle.
Kanu was at the heart of all the Pompey vigour and after eight minutes he should have done better with a glancing header but could only find the hands of Marcus Hahnemann.
It was not long before the Reading defence crumbled and it was the Nigerian causing a nuisance once again.

His strength and persistence at the near post after a Mendes corner led to Gunnarsson bundling into his own net from two yards.
It was not the perfect start for the Icelander's full Premiership debut.
Pompey missed several good chances in the first half, with Benjani Mwaruwari guilty of missing the ball completely on the six yard line.
The interval failed to improve the Reading confidence and Kanu doubled the lead on 52 minutes with a header after a clever volleyed pass from Sol Campbell.
Mendes' inventive magic became more influential as the game progressed and it was no surprise to see him drive home a fine skimming volley on 66 minutes.
Reading finally woke up in the final 10 minutes with Doyle sliding the ball in after a goalmouth scramble following a wild flap from David James.
Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp
"He has been fantastic. Seven goals already is amazing. And he could easily have been given our first one today as well.
"He keeps on heading the ball in and before I brought him here I didn't think he could head it at all.
"We decided to go at them from the first whistle and it paid off with some great football."
Manager Steve Coppell:
"We were up against a strong outfit, well-marshalled at the back, a keeper playing at the top of his game and a powerful, competitive midfield.
"And there was Kanu's finishing. We got back into it then but it was too late.
"If we keep putting our best side out I can guarantee we will be all right. Pompey will definitely be looking up this season rather than down."
