The opposition leader in Ivory Coast, Alassane Ouattara, has accused the government of trying to stifle his party in order to stop him standing in next year's presidential election.

In an interview with the BBC French service, Mr Ouattara said it would be simpler if the authorities allowed a free and fair poll so that the people could decide for themselves.

The government on Wednesday cancelled Mr Ouattara's Ivorian nationality certificate -- a move which could make him ineligible to stand in the election.

The decision has sparked protests from Mr Ouattara's supporters, and several members of his party have been arrested.
