Elections for the West Virginia State Senate took place in 2014. A primary election took place on May 13, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was January 25, 2014.
Following the general election, the Republican Party gained majority control of the West Virginia State Senate. Prior to the election, the Democratic Party held majority control of the chamber with 24 seats. However, after sustaining a net loss of eight seats to bring their total down to 16, the party lost control. Majority control was held by the Republican Party, which increased its total seats from ten to 18.

Qualifications
Section 13 of Article 6 of the West Virginia Constitution states, "No person holding any other lucrative office or employment under this state, the United States, or any foreign government; no member of Congress; and no person who is sheriff, constable, or clerk of any court of record, shall be eligible to a seat in the Legislature."
Competitiveness
Candidates unopposed by a major party
In one of the seventeen districts up for election in 2014, there was only one major party candidate running for election. One Republican was guaranteed election in November barring unforeseen circumstances.
Two major party candidates faced off in the general election in 16 of the 17 districts up for election. Three of these seats, Districts 8, 9 and 16, held mildly competitive elections in 2012.
- District 8: Incumbent Erik P. Wells (D) was defeated by Ed Gaunch (R). In 2012, Chris Walters claimed the other seat in the district left open by Corey Palumbo (D) by a margin of victory of 6 percent.
- District 9: Incumbent Mike Green (West Virginia) (D) was defeated by Jeff Mullins (R). In 2012, Daniel Hall (D) won election to the other seat in the district by a margin of victory of 7 percent.
- District 16: Incumbent John Unger (D) defeated challenger Larry V. Faircloth (R). In 2012, Herb Snyder (D) won re-election to the other seat in the district by a margin of victory of 8 percent.
Primary challenges
Just one incumbent faced primary competition on May 13. Two incumbents did not for re-election in 2014 and another 14 incumbents advanced past the primary without opposition. The state senator who faced primary competition was:
- District 12: Incumbent Sam J. Cann (D) was defeated by Mike Romano in the Democratic primary.
