Perkins adapted a 1980 Stephen King horror short story and it seems that at the last minute he realized how tired the concept of a cursed toy had become. With lousy CGI splatter and failed jokes he desperately tries to make a comedy out of it. But the CGI splatter is neither shocking nor funny and since most of the murders take place off-screen, there is no tension either. A candidate for worst Stephen King adaptation of all time… and that's saying something!

The concept of The Monkey does not exactly lend itself to the most original interventions, but the quality of director Oz Perkins helps it a good deal on its way. The bloodshed is certainly striking, with enough creative ways in which the victims meet their end here. It is nice that the makers are not afraid to seek out graphic violence and they convincingly portray the murders. In combination with the styling of Perkins, you as a viewer are guaranteed good horror entertainment, but one in which the horror comes into its own better than the comedy. Theo James' acting can continue, but on the whole it is not played great and certainly the second half enters somewhat too familiar territory. Nevertheless, without a doubt a fine genre mix with experienced craftsmanship.

I really liked Longlegs so I wanted to watch this latest one from Perkins despite the somewhat negative reviews. I was hoping for at least a nice horror atmosphere but that is not really there, which has to do with the fact that it is a slasher film (not a psychological horror) and you do not really know whether what is shown is meant to be scary or funny. In any case, the horror is not really scary and the humor is not really funny. The additional or underlying story about the twin brothers is not very credible and ultimately not even that relevant because anyone else who would have found the monkey would also have been able to cause all the fatal incidents because there is not much logic in who kills the monkey: the film is mainly a kind of '99 ways to die violently'. The metaphysical theme of the arbitrariness and the nature of the deaths - if everything is an accident nothing is an accident - is not elaborated; the psychological theme that every son gets a bit of horror from his father is somewhat elaborated. Ultimately, the film is – the moral of the story – a celebration of the banality of death: everyone dies, so let's dance. All in all, the film manages to be just entertaining enough to avoid a failing grade.
