“Murder is my favorite crime.”

Rock solid film noir. A murder mystery, a psychological thriller, a story about obsession and jealousy, etc. Laura is an all-rounder and is a nice old-fashioned whodunnit with many twists and an original story structure.

Through the thoughts and memories of the other characters, we as viewers also learn more and more about Laura. And become fascinated yourself in this beautiful, strong and charismatic woman who was murdered. Until big twists turn the whole story upside down. Director Preminger keeps the tension well and the actors are also very strong. Gene Tierney jumps off the screen as Laura and the affection of all the men is understandable. Good work from Andrews and Webb too. Laura could have just been a Hitchcock movie, and that's a big compliment. Many contemporary thrillers can still suck on this.

A whodunit or 'murder mystery' with some characteristics of American film noir and a touch of melodrama. As expected, the path leading to the denouement is tortuous and shrouded in mist. At some point, just about every character is suspected of the murder, which continuously piques curiosity. The inspector's nonchalant approach seems to serve as a rubber band to stretch the story. Like Sam Spade, he seems to have some sort of sixth sense, but instead of questioning all the suspects and making progress, he chooses to play with his prey first. The prey is primarily the viewer; you have to love it of course. Furthermore, the film is visually not very impressive. Some long takes here and there, but not very atmospheric. In terms of decor, it's quite repetitive, with many scenes set in Laura's drawing room, right in front of her portrait. It usually smells like a cheap B-movie, especially when you factor in the unknown cast. However, the acting isn't a total letdown. Webb, in particular, steals the show as a snobbish columnist. Entertaining, but far from the best film in this category.

I've got a soft spot for Gene Tierney, so that's where this movie was, and Dana Andrews is another classic noir hero. Add a nice arrogant performance by Clifton Webb and spice it up with the always cool Vincent Price and you have a nice film, although I have to admit that I found the first half a bit stronger than the second. It was clear to me after 5 minutes who had done it and why. This movie has a twist that I thought was quite unnecessary. The fact that Laura is still alive doesn't add much and doesn't change the plot much, except for the killer to try again. Ultimately, that seems to happen mainly to be able to put more Laura in the film, without everything having to happen in flashback.

It's a noir, so there's a bit of unnecessary and unbelievable romance thrown in, but we'll cover that with the mantle of love.
