"A MAN - Trying to run away from his past... A WOMAN - Trying to escape her future..."
Former private detective Jeff Bailey thinks he has left his criminal past as a garage owner in a small town, but his then client, the wealthy professional gambler Whit Sterling, manages to track him down. Whit wants to hire Jeff's detective skills to track down his irresistible girlfriend Kathie Moffat, who has run off with his $40,000 cash. Whit wants both Kathie, despite shooting him, and the stolen money back. Jeff reluctantly agrees, but it soon becomes apparent that he has incurred a lot and there seems to be no turning back.

Good film about a former private detective who once took a job to find a missing girlfriend of a professional gambler. A fairly complicated plot. Sharp dialogues, but this sometimes comes across as a bit forced within the whole. Otherwise just a fine film noir with a fine role by Robert Mitchum. A small 3.5 stars.

The story of Out of the Past is quite interesting, but the elaboration is not really exciting. Especially Robert Mitchum has to carry the film, the rest is still too mediocre. The film does not always manage to hold the attention and the characters are not very interesting. The images are nice, but not that striking. A film noir that once did quite well, but in the meantime has lost some of its charm and has been overtaken by better films in the genre. Maybe someday with a new look...

Out of the Past has an interesting plot but loses its power due to a somewhat messy execution.
All the characteristic film noir elements can be found in this film. Blackmail, deception and gloom predominate. Where a film noir usually takes place in one city, this film comes in many different places and for a running time of 97 minutes a lot happens. This is also the film's weakness. The first half is easy to follow but after that too much happens in succession that makes you have to think about it a little longer, making the story less interesting. I therefore do not rule out that a second viewing will provide a better experience. Despite that, I did enjoy all the different locations. This film also had a strong femme fatale, the acting was good (nice to see Kirk Douglas in one of his first roles) and I thought the ending was very strong.
