Only one comment here, but it does somewhat express the feeling I have about Dodsworth. It really is a very fine classic, that still stands strong after all these years.

Wyler sketches here, sometimes beautifully, a picture of two people who have grown further and further apart, which also threatens to end their marriage. Walter Huston and Ruth Chatterton really play very strongly here. Huston portrays a recognizable character as the successful businessman, who is very attached to manners and the culture he comes from. Chatterton is his wife, who is happy that she can lead such an "easy" life because of all the money he earns, but in the meantime becomes increasingly irritated by his behavior.

The actors really know how to deepen their characters and make them real people, who both have their good and bad sides. The dialogues are of a high level and the script is well written and has not lost its sharpness. In addition, the subject is still very current, because we live in a time in which divorces occur very often. I enjoyed this quite a bit, despite the fact that it is certainly not a really cheerful film. It could happen to you too, that you wake up one day and discover that you are not married to the person you thought you were married to.

I can fully endorse the comment of Spetie. It is an indestructible marriage drama about a couple that slowly but surely grows apart due to the age gap. The film has lost little of its power over time because of the fascinating and in fact timeless story and the excellent acting performances. Walter Huston (father of director John Huston) plays a role that stands like a house. The same goes for Ruth Chatterton (in her last film that matters) and Mary Astor. The still young David Niven also makes a brief appearance in an early supporting role.
Considering the small number of votes a forgotten gem of master director William Wyler, I fear. Beautiful poster by the way!

William Wyler's 'Dodsworth' is not often mentioned in film lists, but it is a compelling and inventively filmed marriage drama that ends in divorce. At times the film almost looks like a 'Citizen Kane' avant la lettre.
