Ben Harper robbed a bank and stole $10,000, killing two people. He hides the money and only he and his kids know the place. While Harper is in prison and waiting for the noose, a cellmate tries in vain to find out the location of the money. When this cellmate is free, he does everything to get the money.

Beautiful film in which a bank robber, who goes to jail, leaves the money with his children. The course of the story is not easy to predict and especially the whole way in which this film is told is difficult to place (perhaps a dark, adult fairy tale). Excellent camera work and a powerful role from Robert Mitchum.

Charles Laughton was given the opportunity to take the director's chair only once. The failure to make a second attempt was due to the disastrous commercial result. We are disappointed because 'The Night Of The Hunter' is one of the best debut films ever. Rarely seen such a naughty villain as Robert Mitchum in his role of Reverend Harry Powell. His profile against the horizon or his shadow cast forward are enough to increase the tension unbearably.

A movie with a lot of potential: Interesting story, creepy antagonist. The film is also well shot.
Unfortunately, the Christian message is just a bit too thick. Also, I think the ending is a bit clumsy. It could have been a little more spectacular. It all felt a bit dated.
