The only DC superhero to hold its own against Marvel over the years is Batman. Burton made the superhero genre big with Batman and Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy provided new dynamics to the blockbuster that also provided a new wind in other films and franchises. Lately, DC has been limping after Marvel in hopes of building a universe as well. Occasionally they hit, but mostly wrong. Time for a new wind, or maybe back to the roots?

Not an obvious assignment for Matt Reeves, because with all those Batman films, the comparison is quickly made. Moreover, it is difficult to tell the same story again. And the Jokers series - usually also strongly acted - has also become long. Reeves takes Batman back to his roots, without turning it into an origin story. Batman returns as a detective, pulled back behind his mask after the death of his parents with almost no one he trusts. In The Batman this is nicely illustrated with the emo look. Both from Batman himself and the atmosphere and the music. With a dark story to match. It has also become wonderfully dark, we almost crawl behind the mask of the man. With figures that balance between people with their good and bad sides on the one hand and half caricatures on the other.

The Batman has become a film with its own style. No handful of winks to please the fans, no open door to a new universe, no lame one-liners to keep it nice and light. A fascinating story and the necessary tension. Batman is also back as a detective and not a rich snob who only cares about gadgets. Here he is again a hero.

A remarkably mediocre story that is delivered in an overweight way, in a very consistent look in terms of production design, which, however, also becomes boring and whiny due to the length, with half-growled dialogues without a speck of air, an annoying score, and then again a some great shot scenes. I'm not talking about the real action scenes (the chase, meh, or the brawls, meh too, although at least our hero has to take some regular punches, that's something), but what I thought was really cool was the moment that Batman from jumping off the tower and filming the camera from the back. Also cool is the brawl in total darkness (in the club), where you only see what happens when someone fires a salvo. But as a whole I found The Batman hardly entertaining, especially the first hour/an hour and a half, which is so praised here. It doesn't have nearly as interesting a moral drama in the background as Joker.
